Ortus

a latin word meaning rise, becoming visible, appear, birth, origin, source

I am playing with electronic collages using some of my photo elements, exploring the theme of 'Ortus'. This first collage evokes the notion of fire and ice, contrasting elements that we normally don't associate with beginnings or births, but rather with suspended life or death. In the distance, I've brought back from Moonbeam a silhouetted skyline that seems to be on fire. I also photographed a beautiful block of ice... reminiscent of a snow globe. The creature trapped inside is shrouded in fabric. The overall effect is one of containment, yet of imminent new life... birth from ice and fire, eros and logos.

The combination of fire/ice, silver/red is highly evocative, like a volcano under a glacier...the combining of two great forces that shape and transform the earth. Yin/yang...even the shapes of the creature and the ice suggest perfectly balance opposites. A creature born of such forces would be both a creator and a destroyer.

Lovely textures, the sweep and burst of the ice over the smooth flow of the draperies.

I am actually doing preliminary work on a series of Ortus photos. Remember the "Diffusion" magazine I had brought over last year? It featured alternative art photography and processes. I just received the second annual edition and am in the process of savouring it. It has a call for submissions for next year's edition - Group Showcase, on the theme of Ortus. One must submit 5 images. In looking back at my work in various media, I have noticed that rising, visibility, etc. are themes that I seem to like. So, I'm looking at what I have that I could recombine, as well as thinking of a series involving drapes, folds, transparencies—extending the drapery/fold fabric work I had done with James a while back, but using more projected imagery, transparencies, silhouettes, Lensbaby lenses and possibly painting over certain sections.
